SHAKING BOUNDARIES
Exploring design solutions in a changing world.
Scheduled between 2-4 April 2024, the fourth edition of the Design Fest of the Faculty of Architecture of Yaşar University proposes an ever-expanding program of workshops, talks, trips, exhibitions and a competition under the general theme of ‘Shaking Boundaries’, a new variation of previous Fests’ themes – ‘Breaking Boundaries’ (2021), ‘Circulating Boundaries’ (2022), and ‘Questioning Boundaries’ (2023).
With the intention of remarking on the fact that the concept of boundaries plays a significant role in many disciplinary fields including architecture, interior architecture, urban design and urban planning, art, social sciences, and others, the fourth edition of the Design Fest offers a new set of activities encouraging reflections on new possibilities to rethink the idea of boundaries from an interdisciplinary perspective that integrates both theoretical and technical matters.
In particular, the proposed theme revolves around the aim of shaking disciplinary boundaries in a time of changes; the way we are used to living, and more specifically our physical, social and mental environments need to be analyzed and redefined.
The theme “Shaking Boundaries” emerges from the intention of tackling current discourses focusing on global crisis caused by climate change, natural disasters, diminishing resources, wars, displacement of populations, and the urgent need of implementing good practices in planning and design fields, by reviewing innovative educational and training programs offered by higher education institutions, and by identifying righteous models of cooperation between academia and national and international platforms actively engaged in the development of strategic actions toward a sustainable future for humanity.
Moreover, the growing capabilities of AI tools and their potentials to become fundamental aids for all design disciplines will represent a crucial focus of the Design Fest, with a particular emphasis on the current possibilities of employment of AI tools in architectural and interior design education.
Following these intentions, the Design Fest 2024 offers a large variety of extracurricular activities covering crucial issues such as sustainable and resilient development in town planning, architecture and interiors, living and relationships between nature and artifacts, cognitive mapping and placemaking, light pollution, biogenic and earthen architecture, responsive building envelops, and AI-aided design.
Although predominantly oriented toward Architecture / Interior Architecture and Environmental Design disciplines, the program will be open to the participation of students, academicians, and professionals from all design fields.
