Workshop Theme: AI as Project Asistant

This workshop focuses on the possibilities, limitations and ethical limits of using AI applications to support student’s design process in architectural education. The workshop will allow architecture undergraduate students to use AI applications. The students first will be introduced to the theoretical underpinnings of AI, prompts, and NLP before undertaking four distinct tasks. These tasks encompasses: (1) the preparation of project briefs and presentation speeches, (2) receiving user profile-based feedback from AI, adopting specific roles, (3) exploring spatial experience recommendations for their design projects, and (4) formulating novel approaches for utilizing AI systems.

Workshop Theme: Earthquake and Interiors

The subject of the workshop is to strengthen the preliminary preparation that can be done in order to quickly solve the need for shelter in our country, which is tested by disasters, and to create a rapid thinking / evaluation (brainstorming) process in which the interior spaces of the sustainable temporary post-disaster housing compound units are questioned and designed with the Light Steel Frame System. The scope of the project is to produce a practical solution to the problematic issue and to demand the creation of a rapid design idea by emphasising the project management steps for sustainability purposes.

Workshop Theme: Pop-up Architecture for Social Interactions in Post-disaster Scenarios

Pop-up architecture refers to temporary interventions in urban areas with the purpose of enhancing public spaces. Since usually after the disaster produced by earthquakes, reconstruction focuses on housing, social needs of the affected communities are somewhat neglected. The workshop aims at proposing key pop-up interventions in the areas under reconstruction post Kahramanmaraş earthquakes, with the purpose of fostering social interactions. Participating students will propose temporary interventions, in the form of open / semi-open structures or as urban furniture complementing existing proposals. The workshop is open to any student interested in design and in helping communities in the areas affected by recent earthquakes in Turkey.

Workshop Theme: Shaking Cognitive Boundaries: A Window of One’s Own

Our nervous systems are entangled in complicated ways with our physical environment. How do we perceive what we perceive? What are the apparatuses that regulate our relationship with what lies outside of us? How do we recognize and regulate the physical and environmental elements that interact with our nervous system? In pursuit of anwers to such questions this workshop consists of two parts. In the morning session we will explore the relationship between our nervous system and the physical environment through a presentation that is sprinkled with interactive exercises. In the afternoon each participant will have a chance to exercise their design skills by means of a simple personal intervention to help regulate the relationship between their own nervous system and their physical environment.

Workshop Theme: Personal Storage for FARCH Students

In Yaşar University, Faculty of Architecture studios, there is a need of personal storage for students to keep their personal belongings as well as their drawing and model making equipment. This workshop aims to be a participatory process with students to design their own studio environment. In groups of 3-5, students will be asked to design a storage unit for design studios with the help of some guiding keywords including moveable, mid-size, individuality, modularity, free-standing and low-cost. In this 2 days’ workshop, the first day is reserved for the research and conceptual design process. At the end of the 1st day, each group is asked to present their initial ideas. The 2nd day is reserved for the materiality and production as well as paneling optimization and prototyping in YÜTAM. At the end of the workshop, all groups are expected to present both their digital and physical outcomes. The students who will join this workshop are expected to have basic knowledge about furniture design and detailing, and ergonomics-anthropometrics. In addition, students who will participate in this workshop are expected to use two-dimensional drawing and three-dimensional modeling software.

Workshop Theme: Artificial Intelligence in Architectural Design

Artificial Intelligence (AI) stands out as a technology in addressing the productivity decline, influencing the contemporary narrative, and gaining traction across various professions. In the field of architecture, AI applications are increasingly seizing market dominance from established tools like raytracing, image editing, and post-production applications. Beyond traditional software, AI has evolved into a creative tool, shaping the design profession.

For these reasons, this workshop explores the capabilities of the market-leading image-based AI platforms Mid-Journey and Stable Diffusion. In two days, participants will engage in a comprehensive comparison, testing, and evaluation of these platforms. This workshop is suitable for anyone interested in expanding their knowledge and skills in the utilization of image-based artificial intelligence. The workshop does not require prior knowledge but empowers participants to develop an understanding of employing AI in architectural design. Participants may need laptops or tablets for exercises and brainstorming sessions.

Workshop Theme: Shaking the Urban Boundaries

The workshop covers recognizing and analyzing the sensory and cognitive textures of the city, and noticing urban reflexes under conflicting aesthetic effects. The aesthetic (sensory and cognitive) language of the city and the responses of the visitors will be translated/transcribed into the visual representations through different media. The focus region of the workshop is Alsancak, Kıbrıs Şehitleri, and the discussion and transcription sessions will be held in Izmir Chamber of Architects. Therefore, the workshop aims to re-explore and translate the urban experiences in Kıbrıs Şehitleri through the conflicting sensory and cognitive transcripts.

Workshop Theme: Alternative Ways of Building

The impacts of the climate change are already been felt by a large part of the world population and in Turkey, the last years have seen the good share of out-of-range events. In order to limit these impacts, shaking the boundaries of the construction industry that have been set for a world with infinite resources is necessary. Exploring new ways of building, experimenting with different materials based on renewable resources or reuse of existing so-called waste and finding resources in urban mining are possibilities of shaking these boundaries. The proposed workshop is a design and built workshop where participants will experiment different ways of using earth based materials by producing scaled models of pavilions made with earth construction techniques. Touching the materials and approaching these construction techniques through hands-on exercises in the first part will help the participants to understand the material Then they will be able to propose a design through direct modelling and experimenting with materials. The expected outcomes of the workshop are not a fully finished model but more an exploration of the possibility of working with earth and renewable materials in architecture.

Workshop Theme: Place & Narrative

The workshop aims to present a different design perspective to the participants by focusing on the shaking boundaries between past/present/future and human/non-human It also aims to show that design can gain a deeper meaning not only through problem solving but also through the communication we establish with each other and our environment. Participants will create a narrative about the relationship between the city, past and future through group work on an area in Kültürpark. The participants will explore Kültürpark from a different perspective and analyse the changing cultural and social value of the space from past to present. During the analysis, participants will use various placemaking and urban narrative techniques. Presentations on these topics and Kültürpark’s history will contribute to the knowledge of the participants. Through the narratives, the participants will experience Kültürpark through the eyes of the thing that lived in the past (human, animal, plant, object and everything else imaginable) and will strengthen their ability to understand the feelings, thoughts and experiences of the thing. Participants will collaborate to create a memory map of Kültürpark using various techniques. The workshop challenges conventional visualization methods, questions narrative-to-visual transformation, and encourages the use of digital tools.

Workshop Theme: Questioning a Sustainable Future in an Earthquake Region

The main theme of the workshop, the concept of climate and sustainability, plays a role in many fields, including architecture, interior architecture, urban design, art, social sciences and other disciplines. While living in a geography where the terrible consequences of earthquakes are faced, it is impossible not to take earthquake precautions into account while trying to make sustainable design. So,It is necessary to rethink the idea of climates, re-sustainability and earthquake precautions from an interdisciplinary perspective that integrates both theoretical and technical aspects. The proposed theme of “Tiny House in Different Climates” aims to present the design principles in a concrete way by working on the concept of tiny house based on climatic conditions. Tiny house is an architectural and social movement that advocates downsizing, simplifying, and essentially “living with less”. With this movement, the minimalism and re-functioning that will be in the future world order by combining the changing climatic conditions and sustainability were gathered under the theme of ‘Tiny house in different climate conditions’.

Workshop Theme: Stars in the City- A Workshop on Light Pollution Awareness

Stars in the City: A Workshop on Light Pollution Awareness offers a unique opportunity for students to delve into the complicated relationship between urban lighting design and light pollution. Renowned light pollution specialist Bülent Aslan will deliver a lecture on this pressing issue, which will be complemented by a documentary screening titled “The City Dark”. Following these enlightening sessions, with a particular emphasis on the Bayraklı area, students will undertake a thorough investigation into the facade lightings of high-rise buildings with the goal of evaluating their effects on the environment and night sky. Students will learn about the complexities of light pollution through on-site observations, interviews with stakeholders, and photographic documentation. Students will assess current lighting practices via a critical perspective, finding situations when excessive illumination contributes to light pollution. Armed with this knowledge, students will engage in a collaborative process to generate new solutions to the highlighted difficulties. By the end of the workshop, students will be able to gain a deeper understanding of the negative consequences of light pollution as well as a toolkit of innovative ways to lessen its effects and promote a more sustainable and pleasant urban environment. Students will be expected to give a thorough case study presentation at the end of the workshop. This presentation must include an in-depth study of the observed light pollution issues, as well as details on the perspectives of nearby residents and feasible solutions in the form of alternate façade lighting designs. Students are encouraged to use a variety of visual aids, including as pictures, movies, and simulations, to explain their findings clearly and impactfully.

Workshop Theme: Urban Space ‘n’ Play

Brief Description: This workshop is designed for students interested in exploring the transformative power of temporary design in urban spaces within the scope of the play concept.

Objective: The primary objective of this workshop is to emphasize the dynamic relationship between play, temporary use, and the creation of vibrant urban public spaces. By focusing on an urban public space only open to pedestrian use in Konak, participants will have the opportunity to envision and implement temporary and playful design proposals that redefine the way we interact with our built environment.

Urban Tour Theme: Maquis Ecology Walk 

The Maquis Ecology walk goes from Kadifekale through parks and community gardens, along old city walls, past the castle and the old roman theatre, through the old Ottoman historic streets, near ancient ochre sources of Smyrna, over a buried river, under a motorway and finally ends at the Maquis Projects space on İsmet İnönü Sokak. On this walk participants will revert to the ancient role of food gathering from the plants growing along the way. They will then process all collected foodstuff into a shared communal meal at the end of the journey. As walkers move along the route they will be experiencing how both nature and the human history of these places have created specific abiding bodily sensations and experiences. It is important that not only the obvious (such as the spectacular views of the bay) but also the more subtle phenomenon of human architectural interventions, and plant and animal life become part of a heightened pleasure that anchors our being and our imagination to these spaces. All our sensations will be engaged – informed at times by our hunger and acquisitive nature.

Understanding Soft Story in Türkiye: An Interdisciplinary Perspective

The problem of the soft story has been permanently addressed in seismic-related literature and there is plenty of solutions available for retrofitting and strengthening of buildings displaying this design discontinuity. However, the construction of building is never an engineering problem alone, but involves economic constraints, urban processes, users’ preferences and architectural design. Interestingly, these parameters have been absent in the discussion of why after years and years of advanced development of seismic engineering, still buildings in many seismic-prone countries are designed with soft stories. This seminar discusses an understanding of the typological architectural aspects behind the soft story, this is, how this type of architecture emerged in Türkiye. This is because this country have experienced a long list of earthquakes associated with extended damage to RC buildings and soft stories, with no sight to a permanent solution to this problem. The presentation is ultimately an attempt to show a different yet very much needed view over the problem, with the hope that this eventually may lead to implement suitable solutions to soft stories.

Low-damage Resilient Technologies for Seismically Safer and Sustainable Buildings

Lessons from recent earthquakes have provided a tough reality check of the traditional seismic technologies, highlighting the pressing need to transition toward low-damage solutions for the whole building system, including structural and non-structural components such as facades, partitions, ceilings. Modern society is asking for “earthquake-proof” buildings that are able to withstand seismic events without compromising their functionality. This talk delves into techniques for improving the performance of building components during earthquakes. It focuses on how to create damage-control mechanisms for both structural and non-structural components, enabling them to resist higher levels of seismic shaking and thereby reduce damage and post-earthquake losses. Real case studies will be presented to illustrate the effectiveness of low-damage technologies, with emphasis placed on findings obtained from full-scale shake table dynamic experiments.
