Deconstructing The Urban Memory: Buca Cezaevi Compound

The location of the project is the place of Buca Cezaevi Compound where the facility was once located on the outskirts of the city and housed prisoners for many years. The current location is in the heart of Buca district and is surrounded by many residential buildings accommodating the local people. Due to the earthquake shook Izmir in October 2020, the building was abandoned for safety reasons. in 2022, the buildings of the facility were demolished for the sake of redevelopment of the area and no trace of its presence has been left but only the memories of the prisoners, families and officers who worked there. Therefore, site should be considered as a place of memories of the past but also a potential for a common collective utilities and open green usages for the local development of Buca. Based on their site analyses and with an idea for a new urban proposal that connects all sides of the urban environment, students are expected to propose open spaces, bodies and voids that promote the identity of the place and create an environment that works better in terms of public use and urban spaces.

Projenin lokasyonu, tesisin bir zamanlar şehrin eteklerinde yer aldığı ve uzun yıllar mahkumların barındığı Buca Cezaevi Yerleşkesi’nin yeridir. Mevcut konum, Buca ilçesinin kalbinde yer almakta ve yöre halkını barındıran birçok konut ile çevrilidir. Ekim 2020’de İzmir’i sarsan deprem sonucu bina güvenlik nedeniyle terk edildi. 2022 yılında tesisin binaları, bölgenin yeniden imar edilmesi adına yıkılmış ve varlığından hiçbir iz kalmamış, sadece orada yaşayan mahkumların, ailelerin ve memurların hatıraları kalmıştır. Bu nedenle arazi, Buca’nın yerel kalkınması için hem geçmişin anılarının mekanı hem de ortak kolektif faydalar ve açık yeşil kullanımlar için bir potansiyel olarak değerlendirilmelidir. Öğrencilerden, arazi analizlerine dayanarak ve kentsel çevrenin tüm taraflarını birbirine bağlayan yeni bir kentsel öneri fikriyle, mekanın kimliğini destekleyen ve daha iyi çalışan bir çevre yaratan açık alanlar, kütleler ve boşluklar önermeleri beklenir.
