Urban regeneration is an approach to city planning to repair the social and economic problems of an urban area, improving the physical and environmental aspects of the city, as well as the buildings. In other words, it is an urban transformation strategy, which maintains the physical, social, economic, and environmental enhancement in declining urban areas. It is expected to respond not only to the needs of the perpetually changing urban environments but also to the problems that emerge from the relationship between the physical conditions of urban space and socio-economic expectations and/ or challenges.

The focus of the studio was on exploring the socially sustainable and affordable housing environments with in-situ and community-led regeneration potentials for Köyiçi District in Çigli. Identifying the issues and opportunities in the local area next to the stream is the focus to understand and probe what to do about the urban space and community. The spatial conditions and everyday life in the community were surveyed, successful urban regeneration approaches were analyzed, and methodologies for overcoming the social and economic difficulties by means of architectural and urban design strategies were discussed during the semester.

Kentsel dönüşüm, bir kentsel alanın sosyal ve ekonomik sorunlarını onarmak, kentin fiziksel ve çevresel yönlerini ve binaları iyileştirmek için bir şehir planlama yaklaşımıdır. Diğer bir deyişle, gerileyen kentsel alanlarda fiziksel, sosyal, ekonomik ve çevresel iyileştirmeyi sağlayan bir kentsel dönüşüm stratejisidir. Sadece sürekli değişen kentsel çevrelerin ihtiyaçlarına değil, aynı zamanda kentsel mekanın fiziksel koşulları ile sosyo-ekonomik beklentiler ve/veya zorluklar arasındaki ilişkiden kaynaklanan sorunlara da cevap vermesi beklenmektedir.

tüdyonun odak noktası, Çiğli’deki Köyiçi Mahallesi için yerinde ve toplum liderliğindeki yenileme potansiyelleriyle sosyal açıdan sürdürülebilir ve uygun fiyatlı konut ortamlarını keşfetmekti. Akarsuyun yanındaki yerel alandaki sorunları ve fırsatları belirlemek, kentsel alan ve topluluk hakkında ne yapılacağını anlamak ve araştırmak için odak noktasıdır. Dönem boyunca mahalledeki mekansal koşullar ve günlük yaşam incelendi, başarılı kentsel dönüşüm yaklaşımları analiz edildi ve sosyal ve ekonomik zorlukların mimari ve kentsel tasarım stratejileri aracılığıyla aşılmasına yönelik metodolojiler tartışıldı.
