PROJECT DESCRIPTION / PROJE TANIMI
Even though the change has been neglected in architectural design, it has always been a part of human being and society since the needs, activities and space requirements are changing constantly. UNIT 4 focuses on designing architectural projects at the waterfront by exploring the concepts of adaptability, flexibility, movement and transformation, and applying those concepts to the proposed building in response to the change. As being an interface between city and sea, waterfronts are the most challenging and dynamic parts of the cities. The waterfront can provide a platform not only to create social and economic benefits, but also response to the increasing future demands of the city. The students in UNIT 4 have re-designed the Konak Ferry Terminal by shaping their design ideas around the of theme of change. The proposed buildings are not only a transition space or a gateway to the waterfront’s diverse activities, but also a social activity center hosting several functions to the demands of the users. The building programs have been developed by the students considering the future needs. While proposing their design solutions, the students have considered both the connection between sea and city, and the adaptation to functional, spatial and environmental changes to establish programmatic, environmental and social inputs. They have also used adaptive/kinetic structures on the building envelope which can response to spatial, functional and environmental changes.
