Analysis of the relationship between space, design and everyday life in public housing settlements that are built in the context of urban renewal plans in İzmir: The Örnekköy and Uzundere settlements
Aim
To provide a basis to develop the spatial quality of public housing projects that are being built in the context of urban renewal plans in İzmir.
Rationale
In urban renewal plans that are implemented in İzmir, the population of the renewed areas are generally resettled in public housing projects that are located on the outskirts of the city. These settlements are planned on modernist architectural and planning principles, which are based on an ideal modern, middle-class urban user profile. The real users, on the other hand, come from low-income groups, who had been living in substandard houses located near the city center. Therefore, there is a considerable divergence between the spatial practices as well as the concepts of publicity and privacy and gender roles of the ideal and real users of the public housing settlements. The analysis of the relationship between space, design and everyday life in these settlements and provision of guidance for the development of new planning proposals will form a valuable resource for future projects.
Theoretical approach and method
The theoretical background of the research is based on such theorists as Henri Lefebvre and Michel de Certeau who understand space as the articulation of modes of spatial production, spatial practices, and the materiality of space (Lefebvre, 1991; De Certeau, 1984). Research methods include digitally supported qualitative data analyses, semi-structured interviews and questionnaires. The aim is to provide an interactive network by digital data visualization.
Goals and contribution
The goal of the research is to reveal the mode of articulation of planned spaces with the actual spatial practices of the inhabitants in public housing projects that are built in the context of urban renewal plans in İzmir. The digital network that manifests the research results is one of the earliest products of the digital humanities discipline in Turkey. This is projected to be an open network which can be accessed by the public. The interpretation of the data will lead to critical decisions in the planning of future public housing projects that are necessitated by urban renewal plans.
